For protein deficient diets, support your horse with essential amino acids. Tri-Amino contains the essential amino acids Lysine, Methionine and Threonine, which must be supplied in the diet because the horse’s body cannot make enough on its own. Lysine, Methionine and Threonine are also limiting amino acids, meaning that if they are not present in adequate amounts, the body is limited in its ability to make protein.
The level of amino acids is just as important as the horse’s total protein intake. Shortage of key essential amino acids, the building blocks of protein, is more common than inadequate protein intake. Essential amino acids are those the horse’s body cannot manufacture for itself. Assembly of protein will stop if an essential amino acid is next in sequence but is not available because the sequence of amino acids in a muscle is dictated by the DNA.
Lysine and Threonine are the two essential amino acids most likely to be deficient, which limits the body’s ability to build muscle. These can be supplemented in their pure form. Suggested amounts are 10 to 20 grams of Lysine and 2 to 4 grams of Threonine daily. Deficiency of the amino acid Methionine is also common, however its deficiency impacts muscle function more than bulk because Methionine combines with Lysine to form Carnitine, a carrier needed for the muscle to burn fat. Recommended supplementation is 5 to 10 grams per day.
