October News From The Ranch

Welcome Fall and all of the wonderful, if not unpredictable lovely weather it brings. Hopefully you have been getting out and enjoying this time of year as much as we have. The horses are beginning to get fuzzy and the days are getting shorter reminding us that winter is not too far off. We have been making the most of the nice days and getting out more. Fall riding is probably our favorite time of year. With the Red Rock Rumble 30-50-75-100 just around the corner on 15 October we have spent a lot of time checking and clearing trails for the event. The deer and antelope are more prevalent this time of year and it is sure nice to see them. We even were lucky enough to find a really nice 3 point shed along one of the trails. It has been a while since we have found such nice one. If you are interested in helping out at the ride or learning more about endurance let us know. Even if you do not aspire to riding long distance it is a great way to meet great trail riding buddies and explore new areas.

With the changing of the seasons we like to give our horses immune system a little boost to deal with what can be dramatic changes to weather. Phyto-Quench has been our go to for many years. It provides powerful antioxidants featuring Devils’ Claw to help maintain healthy immunity, especially for horses not on fresh pasture. With phytonutrient rich ingredients for vascular and tissue integrity, Phyto-Quench fight the damaging effects of free radicals by neutralizing oxidative reaction to maintain a normal inflammatory response. Plant-based phytonutrients include garlic, Devil’s Claw, Turmeric, Grape See, Ginkgo Biloba and Boswella. For more information on the immune system check out this article from Dr. Kellon https://drkhorsesense.wordpress.com/2018/02/26/immune-function/

Last month we talked about the Versa Grip Glue On by Easycare. We gave the Glue on a try using the Super Glue method and we are happy to report that they worked great. They stayed on for the entire 6 week trim cycle with over 200 miles of riding over various terrain types. They were relatively easy to remove and did not cause any issues with hoof wall or sole. In fact, Nugget’s hooves looked great. Stephanie trimmed her up and we set another pair this time using the EasyBond Glue just to see if there was a difference with different glues. Nugget is traveling well in the shoes. For reference, Nugget has been barefoot for the past 11 years and does not have any issues other than being 24 and still going down the trail strong. She goes great in boots or barefoot and has very healthy hooves. We will keep you posted on how the next set goes.

DELIVERY DAYS

Putting the schedule out a few months ahead still seems to be working well, so we will continue to post three months of deliveries at a time. With fuel prices as high as they are we will be trying to be as efficient as possible in our delivery days. We are making fewer additional trips to town as well so our ability to fit in a last minute order is a little limited so may not happen as fast as you have experienced in the past. Special trips to town for that “I have to have it or else…” order will have a $10 delivery fee. If you need to, you can always stop by and pick up anything you might need, just give us a call ahead of time to schedule. The sooner you get your orders in the better we are able to plan, but not later than 5pm the night before your scheduled delivery day. With winter will come weather than can impact our deliveries. If we have to make changes we will let you know. It is always a good idea to plan ahead and have enough to carry your through an extra week if the even weather keeps us from delivering as planned. Thank you
