It looks like spring is trying hard to make an appearance. The snow is starting to slowly melt away and there are more sunny nice days to enjoy. Of course the horses have known for a while that it was coming as evidenced by the amount of shedding going on. Even though the snow and cold was present the amount of hair coming out in the brushes has increased.
Spring is also the time for those new foals to be presenting themselves and the young horses to get started under saddle. All of these changes can require additional nutritional support and calories depending on the amount of work we are asking for. While there really is no such thing as “one size fits all” when it comes to nutrition there are some products that work well for pretty much every stage to help your horse. The products we use to keep things simple are Equi-base Grass for complete vitamins and minerals along with CocoSoya for balanced Omega 3-6-9. This base keeps things simple yet complete. From there we can adjust as necessary for each horse and their particular situation.
If you want to get really exact information on what your horses particular needs are you can get a full hair and tissue analysis done through Sheryl at Resilient Metabolism. All of her information can be found in our April news letter. We will be doing this with one of our own horses to evaluate her past nutrition compared to her current state on our feeding program and again toward the end of the year to see where she is. We are very much looking forward to evaluating our feed program. You will hear more throughout the year as we learn more.

We discovered Keratex powder a few years ago when dealing with nasty scratches. This works wonders for keeping the skin healthy and preventing scratches. We keep a bottle in all of the trailers and the barn. Sprinkle on boots, gaiters and even girth before a workout to prevent issues. If we are in an area that is particularly alkaline we sprinkle it on legs daily and rub in to help also. Works great on rain rot as well and soothes those itchy spots on the tail dock.
Another product that we always keep on hand is Coat Defense. We were initially introduced to this product to help dry sweaty coats in the winter. But it does so much more. It comes in 3 sizes with refillable bottles and a convenient 4 pound refill bag. It also comes in a paste that is great for wound healing and helping hair growth, We use it post ride by dusting it on the sweaty parts then rubbing in and brushing. It leaves the coat shiny and smelling great.

Delivery Days for MAY
Hoping that we will not have any weather issues but just in case we will adjust as necessary and add on days later in the month if needed. It is always best to get your order for the month in as early as possible. You can text, email or order on line. Please take a look at the schedule to make sure you have your orders in as early as possible. We will not deliver during wet weather. It is just too hard on some of the feeds to be exposed to moisture if you don’t have the ability to open the bags and let them breath a bit upon delivery. Putting the schedule out a few months ahead still seems to be working well, so we will continue to post three months of deliveries at a time. With fuel prices as high as they are we will be trying to be as efficient as possible in our delivery days. We are making fewer additional trips to town as well so our ability to fit in a last minute order is a little limited so may not happen as fast as you have experienced in the past. Special trips to town for that “I have to have it or else…” order will have a $10 delivery fee. If you need to, you can always stop by and pick up anything you might need, just give us a call ahead of time to schedule. The sooner you get your orders in the better we are able to plan, but not later than 5pm the night before your scheduled delivery day. With winter will come weather than can impact our deliveries. If we have to make changes we will let you know. It is always a good idea to plan ahead and have enough to carry your through an extra week if the weather keeps us from delivering as planned. Thank you
