June News From The Ranch

Spring has finally sprung it seems. The grass is coming in green and thick, the wildflowers are off the hook in the middle altitudes and just starting higher up. The spring rains are coming in just the right amount to really get things going. We love this time of year. Cool mornings, warm days and back to cool evenings that are long enough to enjoy nice evening rides. So many wonderful things about spring.

But then there are the other aspects of spring that are not so pleasant………….

That grass that is oh so green and yummy can cause all sorts of problems from laminitis to tummy aches to allergies….but it tastes soooooo good!!!! All things in moderation (this also applies to Dove Dark Chocolate!) That said it is always good to be aware of the changes that can happen and be prepared to deal with them. If you have a laminitis prone horse follow your vets advice and keep a set of Clouds on hand for those days when the feet get sensitive.

There are also those pesky biting bugs that come with the nice green grass and warmer temperatures. You can really help keep them at bay by using Bug NM by Uckele. This one makes the horses less desirable as a snack for the biting bugs and keeps the flies less bothersome as well.

Please check the delivery schedule for updates. I am going out of town this week and will not be delivering on Thursday as planned. Anyone who has their orders in by 8am on Wed I will get delivered on Wed otherwise I have fit you all in next week. I will be at Washoe Lake State Park from Wednesday through Sunday so if you can get your order from me there that would be great but you need to let me know before Tuesday the 4th.

We hope you get through Spring and Summer without event and make some really great memories and enjoy some wonderful adventures. This is a great time of year to be out – just be prepared!

Keratex is a mainstay in the trailer and the barn. Since we have a few that are really prone to scratches we use this liberally inside anything that goes on the legs. This includes splint boots and hoof boot gaiters. Anything that can rub or cause sand to get caught and mixed with sweat. This has been a great preventative to keep on hand.

Another product we don’t leave home with…Coat Defense. This powder works great after a workout to help dry up sweat and prevent fungus. We also use it at the dock of the tail and main to prevent sweet itch and keep them from rubbing out their beautiful manes and tails. This comes in several sizes from 3.5 oz, 8 oz, 16 oz and the 4 lb bag to refill your smaller containers. Prevent fungus and enjoy healthy coat, mane and tale with Coat Defense

Smart Carb is one of the new products on our list from Standlee. Formulated by an acclaimed Ph.D. Equine Nutritionist, Standlee Smart Carb™ Performance is a highly palatable teff grass and alfalfa-based forage option with low sugar and starch content specifically tailored for performance horses. Additionally, a probiotic has been incorporated to enrich the microbiome function for improved digestion.

Also from Standlee we have added Alfalfa/Oat Grass Pellets. Standlee Premium Western Forage Alfalfa Oat Grass Pellets are made from high-quality sun-cured forage formed into ¼ inch hay pellets that are easy to measure and to feed. Alfalfa Oat Grass hay is moderate in protein, high in digestible fiber, and low in carbohydrates, making it a great option for carb-sensitive horses.

It is always best to get your order for the month in as early as possible and to plan ahead. PLEASE get your orders in by Sunday evening to make sure your order is on a truck when it heads your way. We are going to be as efficient as possible and take advantage of all good weather once the truck arrives. We will not deliver during wet weather. It is just too hard on some of the feeds to be exposed to moisture if you don’t have the ability to open the bags and let them breath a bit upon delivery. Putting the schedule out a few months ahead still seems to be working well, so we will continue to post three months of deliveries at a time. With fuel prices as high as they are we will be trying to be as efficient as possible in our delivery days. We are making fewer additional trips to town as well so our ability to fit in a last minute order is a little limited so may not happen as fast as you have experienced in the past. Special trips to town for that “I have to have it or else…” order will have a $10 delivery fee. If you need to, you can always stop by and pick up anything you might need, just give us a call ahead of time to schedule. The sooner you get your orders in the better we are able to plan, but not later than 5pm the night before your scheduled delivery day. With winter will come weather than can impact our deliveries. If we have to make changes we will let you know. It is always a good idea to plan ahead and have enough to carry your through an extra week if the weather keeps us from delivering as planned. Thank you
